Picture this: 15,000 young concertgoers in post-Mao China, sitting stone-faced in near-total silence while two very energetic lads from North London bop around the stage in almost fast-forward speed, singing joyfully about (of all things) Freedom. The contradiction is significant; the irony is palpable. The awkwardness? EXTREME.

Wham! 10 Days in China captures one of the most improbable rock tour experiments of the 1980s, and the new film that played in theaters for just one night last week (July 28) is a masterclass in cultural anomalies, communist history (as it pertains to pop music and just JOY in general), rabid and rude reporters, iconic plaid blazers, and the often overlooked influence Wham! had in the early 80s. (Hey, don’t look at me, they had me at Go-Go.) The documentary not only captures the band’s historic visit to China (they were the first Western pop group to ever perform there) but is full of heartwarming, heartbreaking, and yes, even hilarious glimpses of their unprecendented 10 day visit.

I (Michelle) arrived at the theater last week (with 1984 George and Andrew emblazoned on my chest, naturally) thinking I was going to watch a concert movie. Perhaps sing along with the people in my row I’d befriended over a pre-movie chat about our favorite Wham! deep cuts (it’s “Heartbeat” for me since no one asked). And while yes, there was a significant amount of performance, that’s not what moved me. Here are 10 things that did (and yes, #2 is a hill I’ll die on).

10. “Be careful what you wish for” should have been the alternate title of this film. Many of us Wham! fanatics know that their April 1985 performances in China were groundbreaking, with them being the first Western pop group to ever perform in the country (again, people, this was in 1985 … not 1965). But their reason for performing wasn’t as altruistic as we thought.

Wham! hadn’t broken the United States yet, and TBH didn’t have the patience to start at the bottom, playing small venues and working their way up to the level of success they’d already found in the UK. (To be fair, present-day Andrew Ridgeley says George Michael also had undiagnosed vocal cord nodules, which is much better optics than greed, isn’t it?) The two-city tour in China was all a publicity stunt to MAKE IT BIG (no pun intended, but it’s a good one) in America. They figured all the attention they’d get from the press would lay much of the groundwork they’d need to hit the American soil running … and they were right.

However, be careful what you wish for, boys, because …

9. The journalists, reporters, and media ate them alive. For real, they were rabid, and not in a FANTASTIC way (yeah, it’s another pun; this one was intended). And George and Andrew (especially) had ZERO patience for it, especially when they were forced to have a press conference where the reporters spewed lies and grilled them on communist police activities at their concert that the boys had no knowledge of. George and Andrew were carrying an enormous weight and responsibility throughout these 10 days without factoring in the media, which made it far heavier. They weren’t prepared for it. Full stop. And the documentary illustrates their frustration and (dare I say it?) regret at this entire endeavor. The road to hell is paved with good intentions, right?

8. On a different note, Andrew Ridgeley can be a salty, spicy little lad, and I’m HERE FOR IT. Scene: The boys are taken to the Great Wall for photo ops. There are probably 75 media folks crowding them as they are instructed to stroll along … gaze out at the hills … pose with small children in communist police uniforms (as you do). One reporter shouts out to Andrew, who has had on his very 1985 rounded, mirrored sunnies the entire time, “Andrew! Can we get one without the glasses?” And Andrew just stands there like a statue, making no move for the glasses. #ICON

7. Speaking of Andrew, I’ll be waiting for his 1985 style to come back around, which it should be doing soon if I’m doing my fashion-math correctly (maybe it already has? Oh sh*t, did I miss it?!?). Think oversized plaid blazers paired with a crisp white button-up shirt (buttoned all the way up to the top), skinny black ankle pants, white socks and black flats (in Andrew’s case, make them velvet with a gold skull and crossbones on them). I would wear that outfit today.

6. The boys’ fashion (and the band’s, which was equally fab), was in stark contrast to the Chinese concert attendees, who arrived at the venues in drab, gray slacks paired with long-sleeved shirts (also gray) for the men, and gray skirts and button-ups for the gals. Once again for the people in the back, this was 1985, not 1965. And again, these people had never heard pop music. It was heartbreaking — and a little humorous — to watch them listen to “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” for the very first time. The looks of complete astonishment on their faces! They didn’t know what to do! But by the end of the song, these sheltered Chinese teens were bopping around the gigantic boombox in the store even though they had no idea what George was saying. Which segues nicely into …

5. Music, man. It’s a drug. It has the power to bridge cultural differences and change lives, even if you can’t understand the lyrics.

4. A good sax solo can make you cry. Go listen to the opening of “Careless Whisper” again. Now imagine that sax solo extended to about 4 minutes, in a dark arena filled with people who’ve never heard music like that before or have probably never seen a black musician in front of their very own eyes playing music that is so soulful it makes you cry. That. Is. Powerful. Stuff.

3. I’m not proud of it, but my knowledge of the political structure of China in April 1985 is not great. Example: I was surprised that the Beijing show was highly patrolled by the police, who were so concerned with FROLICKING and DANCING and general ENJOYMENT that they arrested a man for feeling the music and the joy so much that he did the unthinkable crime of getting up on his seat and dancing. Yet a couple of days later in Guangzhou, things were much more relaxed. The crowd screamed, clapped along, danced, and basically lost their minds. And it was not only okay, but celebrated. (Don’t bother schooling me about 1985 communist China in the comments. I promise I will not retain it.)

2. The #2 thing that moved me? The top of George Michael’s bare butt that you get a looong glimpse of when he’s being interviewed while getting a massage (see #9). That man was a piece of art. A PIECE OF ART. And no, that’s not me objectifying him; it’s me appreciating him. I think if you’ve made it this far, it goes without saying that I appreciate him for far more than his butt. His voice and his music are a gift that keeps on giving.

And the #1 thing I took away from the documentary? It’s something I’ve known since 1984, but was illustrated so beautifully through this film: Wham!’s music — and their unbridled JOY in performing — transcends politics, cultures, and decades. It connects.

Damn, we need more Wham! right now. Go push play on “I’m Your Man.” I dare you not to smile and clap and dance on your chair. As George Michael says, “do it with me.”

No, it’s not a sale on 20-pound tubs of guac. It is something far more important. Dare we even say … sacred?

This is not a drill, people: ESPRIT is back, and it’s (strangely) at Costco…and Generation X is currently losing its collective mind.

Imagine our surprise and delight when we recently perused the middle aisle of Costco and discovered throwback, colorful ESPRIT logo sweatshirts nestled right between the bulk K-cups and industrial-sized bottles of maple syrup, for the low price of $16.99.

Did we lose our minds? Did we race-walk like a 5th grader on their way to recess? Did we perhaps let out a scream that was more than a little alarming for the old man shopping for Levis at the next table? Yes, yes, and definitely — and apologetically, sir — yes.

If you didn’t grow up in the era of neon, cassette tapes, and iron-on t-shirt decals, it’s hard to explain the absolute chokehold ESPRIT had on us. Walking the halls of your middle or high school wearing that instantly-identifiable logo (you know, the one with the missing vertical bar on the capital E) or carrying your Trapper Keeper in a multi-colored ESPRIT tote, you walked a little taller; you were the fashion north star.

And we all have an ESPRIT story! Maybe you, like Michelle, were lucky enough to visit one of the gigantic ESPRIT outlet stores — the mecca, the Disneyland, the Taj Mahal of 80s fashion — and stock up on school clothes, shoes, and totes galore (as long as you shared them with your sister).

Maybe you have memories of flipping through the iconic, glossy catalogs, or scouring the pages of your Seventeen magazine for the colorful, whimsical ads, perhaps even tearing them out (with great care) to pin to your bulletin board or decoupage your PeeChee folder.

Maybe your mom told you you didn’t need to wear a clothing brand ON THE OUTSIDE OF YOUR CLOTHES, KIMBERLY to look cool, no matter how much you coveted that stenciled logo.

Maybe you saved all your babysitting money for the hugely-popular multi-colored logo tee and wore it in your school picture for three years in a row.

Whatever your ESPRIT story is, it’s time to write a new one. Yes, one that stars your 45, 55, even 60 year old self … if you’re lucky enough to snag one right now at Costco.

No lie, GenXers around the country are in a panic, calling in sick to hit all the Costcos in a 3-state radius, creating text-trees (like phone-trees but make it 2026) so when Lisa M. finds the sweatshirts in stock she can get enough for Lisa J., Lisa P., Jennifer L., Jennifer B., and Amy. It’s chaos. It’s panic. And it’s joyful. Full-on friendships are being cultivated at the sweatshirt stacks! When Michelle was furiously rummaging through the sizes at her local Costco (which still has plenty if any of you want to make a trip to Denver) and panicking because she couldn’t find any size Large, a woman balancing a stack of about five sweatshirts in one hand and texting with her friend in California in the other kindly pointed her in the direction of the right stack. This led to both of them trying on various sizes for each other to assess the fit, the woman snapping photos of Michelle in both a size L and XL (seems her CA friend is about Michelle’s size), and a fun discovery of shared early-80s visits to the ESPRIT outlet. If Michelle hadn’t had to be at an appointment they’d probably still be there, reminiscing about the different styles of tote bags over a hot dog/Coke combo.

Some GenXers are even healing their inner (still bitter) child to be able to buy one now for just $17 when their family couldn’t afford the pricey brand in the 80s. Heartwarming stuff.

Sure, some may say it’s just a sweatshirt. But is it? As we navigate the complexities of mid-life and menopause, these Costco ESPRIT sweatshirts are wrapping us up in more than (moderately) cozy fleece. They’re hugging us with their colorful joy. They’re a reminder of a time when we didn’t wakeup in the middle of the night in a pool of our own sweat.

When our knees didn’t betray us unexpectedly while climbing up our own stairs.

When we’re smack in the middle of losing our kids to life and our parents to death.

When we had departments in our country that helped make sure raspberries didn’t give us explosive diarrhea for three weeks.

When life was simpler.

After all, Esprit de corps translates literally to “spirit of the body.” In practice, it describes a shared feeling of camaraderie, enthusiasm, and devotion to a cause among the members of a group. And when you find a $17 piece of clothing that can do all that? Magic.

So join the hunt.

Go to Costco.

Get the sweatshirt, if you can.

Just make sure to leave one for that sweaty-faced GenXer race-walking up behind you.

3. Queue up a Pop Culture Preservation Society episode.

We’re not here to convince you that everything was better when we were kids. It wasn’t! People were a**holes back then, too! Our only two beverages were Kool Aid and hose water! Instead we’re here to examine our Gen X childhoods, laugh hysterically, cry unexpectedly, and see how all of that informs who we are today.

Every generation has a story. Ours happened to be told through Saturday morning cartoons, shopping malls, mixtapes, sitcoms, and the last great analog childhood.

And – stay with us here – what if nostalgia wasn’t just about going backward? What if it was about bringing our younger and older selves together in the same room? And what if that actually helped us live a happier life? THIS is what we do. 

Psychologist and nostalgia researcher, Clay Routledge, believes that nostalgia is one of the most underrated psychological resources we have. Author Kate Bowler just wrote about his work in a recent Substack post and she says, “His (Routledge) core move is to flip the orientation. Nostalgia looks backward, but it functions forward. It is not retreat; it is preparation. It is how we pull the past into the present in order to imagine a future that has us in it. Nostalgia, Routledge argues, puts us on the offense.” YES YES YES!!! We’re not wallowing in Happy Days, we’re accessing those feelings we had for Fonzie and getting a little boost of dopamine so we can function like rational adults in this irrational world.

Several years ago, we attended a Barry Manilow concert in Palm Springs (and, yes, we did bring the average age of the audience down by about 10 years). At one point in the show, a large screen descended over the stage and we saw video of the first time a then thirtysomething-year old Barry sang “Mandy” on television. After the chorus…the real, present day, 78-year-old Barry strolls on stage to sit at his piano and join his younger self in a “duet” of that epic song. At that exact moment, we were our little girl selves AND our present day selves. As Carolyn likes to say, “My 11 year-old self and 55 year-old self were holding hands and belting out Mandy together!” We’ve come to refer to these kinds of experiences as being “Manilowed.” We guarantee you that there is no better anti-aging drug that is as powerful as being “Manilowed.”

This is legit, people. Research shows that flipping through an old issue of Tiger Beat while listening to the “Grease” soundtrack is good for you. These trips down Memory Lane increase our wellbeing, our sense of self, and our connection to one another. And really, isn’t that something we could all use a little more of right now?
